AI Search Is Eating Your Website Traffic: What to Do

Your rankings are fine. Your traffic is not. That is the most common conversation business owners are having in 2026.

Kent Mauresmo, who runs the SEO agency SEO Noble, puts it plainly: owners open their analytics, see organic traffic down 30 or 40 percent, panic, then check their rankings and find them exactly where they were. If that sounds familiar, you are not imagining it. AI search is now answering your customers' questions right on the results page, and fewer people than ever are clicking through to your site.

This is not a glitch or a bad month. Four separate studies say the same thing.

The numbers are ugly

Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches across 900 US adults and found that only 8 percent of visits to search pages resulted in a click on a link when an AI summary was present, compared to 15 percent without one. Worse, just 1 percent clicked on a citation inside the AI summary itself. Your site can be the source of the answer and still get almost nothing for it.

Ahrefs went bigger: 300,000 keywords, and the click-through rate for the top result dropped 58 percent when an AI Overview appeared. Their study of 963 French domains showed a 23.1 percent median CTR loss, and the trend line is the scary part. In spring 2025 the penalty was 34.5 percent. By end of 2025 it was 58 percent. Their conclusion: it does not fade with time, it gets worse.

Then came the experiment that removed all doubt. Researchers at ISB and Carnegie Mellon ran a randomized field test with 1,065 users. When AI answers were present, outbound clicks fell 39.8 percent and zero-click searches jumped 34.5 percent. Three different methods, one verdict.

Data from Advanced Web Ranking, analyzed by iPullRank across more than 1.75 million US search pages a month, fills in the picture: the number-one result gets a 20.02 percent click rate without an AI Overview and 9.69 percent with one. And searches that end with no organic click at all rose from 53.6 percent to 74.3 percent when an AI Overview showed up.

Inc.com recently told the real-world version. A company that, in their words, did everything right watched its traffic fall off a cliff anyway. Their audit found the usual suspects: pages cannibalizing each other, listicles getting demoted, and AI answers siphoning the rest.

Why this is structural, not a glitch

Google is not testing a feature here. It is changing what a search result is. The AI answer sits on top, it is good enough for most questions, and most people stop scrolling. Meanwhile Google is expanding the thing that hurts most: AI Mode, the full conversational search experience, is rolling out worldwide, and Search Engine Roundtable has spotted Google testing links inside AI Overviews that lead to AI Mode instead of websites.

So the funnel now has a new step. Your page does not compete with the nine blue links anymore. It competes with an answer that already satisfied the searcher before they ever saw you.

You cannot opt out, so stop asking

Go read any small-business marketing thread this year and you will find the same two questions: why is my traffic dropping even though I rank on page one, and can I opt out of AI Overviews? The honest answer to the second one is basically no. Google has said plainly that no special markup is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. If your site is indexed and eligible for search, you are in the pool. You do not get to sit out the part where the AI reads your page.

But that sentence is also the opportunity. If the AI is reading your page anyway, the game changes from winning the click to winning the citation. The businesses that get mentioned in the answer still get found. The ones the AI never reads quietly disappear from the funnel.

What to do instead

First, make your pages quotable. AI summaries pull from pages with clear, direct answers. Put the answer up top, not buried at paragraph twelve. Use FAQ blocks and structured headings so the AI can extract your content cleanly. You are now writing for two readers: the person and the model that decides what the person sees.

Second, fix page cannibalization. When three of your pages compete for the same query, the AI picks one and ignores the rest, or worse, cites none of them. The Inc.com company's audit found exactly this. Consolidate overlapping pages into one strong answer per topic.

Third, protect the pages that still earn clicks. Transactional and local searches still send people to websites. Someone searching for pricing, booking, or a shop near them still clicks. Informational content is where the AI eats your lunch, so put your best effort into the pages that close business.

Fourth, change what you measure. Sessions from search are a shrinking metric and they will keep shrinking. Track how often your brand gets cited in AI answers and how often your pages appear in the AI Overviews' source lists. Impressions are becoming the new currency of visibility.

Fifth, keep publishing, but change the format. Long explainers that end where the reader's question ends are exactly the content AI answers replace. Content that leads somewhere, a quote, a booking, a download, a conversation, still has a job to do.

Quick answers to the questions everyone asks

Why is my traffic dropping if my rankings are fine? Because ranking and getting clicked are now two different games. You can hold position one and still lose most of your clicks to the AI answer sitting above you.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews? Not in any practical way. Being indexed means being readable by Google's AI. Your only real choice is whether it quotes you or someone else.

Does this mean SEO is dead? No, but the old scoreboard is. Rankings without clicks are vanity metrics. The work now is being the source the AI trusts, on the pages that matter to your revenue.
